Expatriate Living in Spain

from:

At various stages of life it may be right for a person or family to choose to experience living in a different country and in a different culture to that of their homeland. There are of course many beautiful places in the world you can choose to live, and living in Spain makes a great choice for people of widely differing tastes and at different times of life.

Single people may find that they have the time and lack of responsibility that will make living in Spain great fun and very feasible. A couple with children may want to give their family the opportunity to observe and live in Spain providing a valuable and bilingual education. Retired couples may find that they can live a new lifestyle comfortably with the retirement income they have put aside, whilst enjoying an active life because of the comfortable climate. Whatever the reason choosing expatriate living in Spain will certainly provide a great adventure and learning experience.

Spain is a large country, much of it sparsely populated, and it is actually the second most mountainous country in Europe.  Its various regions offer a wide range of landscape, climate, local cuisine and customs.  Some cities, such as Madrid and Barcelona are vibrant, sophisticated cities, but there are parts of Extramadura where you may feel the clock has turned back more than fifty years.

History and Culture

Living in Spain will provide great opportunities to experience the culture and history of the Spanish people. Spaniards are proud of their heritage and there are many festivals and ceremonies throughout the year when newcomers can see Spain's rich culture at its best. Through some basic inquiries of the Spanish locals, the local tourist office, or on the internet these many opportunities will become quite apparent. The culture and history can be experienced by attending a bull running, a local fiesta, or by visiting one of the many great museums throughout the country. People who choose to live in Spain will enjoy taking every chance they can to attend these various events and learn about the country and the people.

The Climate

Most people who think of living in Spain realize that the country offers a warm climate in the summer, and indeed for some the climate may even be considered too hot at the peak of summer. Spain rests just north of the African continent with its southern and eastern borders being the Mediterranean Sea. This means that the southern and eastern coastal areas offer a great climate for all seasons of the year.  Inland, particularly in Andalucia, temperatures can be very high in July and August.  On the other hand, inland areas will be considerably cooler in winter than the on the coast. The country also has several mountain ranges that receive substantial snow fall and allow all types of winter activities including several popular ski resorts. People who enjoy water sports, winter sports, and mountaineering will find that the country has much to offer.

The Cost of Living in Spain

People will find that living in Spain can be quite economical, although it has to be said that prices have increased since the advent of the Euro. If a person has their own income they can easily budget for housing, utilities, food, and other such expenses. People who will need to work in the country need to take the time to understand the taxes of the country. Things such as healthcare, automobiles, and emergency travel funds also need to be considered. Cars in particular can be expensive in Spain, relative to other countries in Europe.  When choosing to live in a different country a person should plan well in advance for the governmental and tax structure. This being said, the benefits of living in Spain may far outweigh any additional living expenses.
