The Delights of Denia
from:The province of Alicante offers an appealing combination of a warm climate, tranquil nature reserves and fine regional cuisine. It also encompasses the beautiful sandy beaches of the Costa Blanca, where the action-packed resorts of Benidorm, Calpe and Alicante town provide a wealth of activities and entertainment. Dotted among these large and lively centres are smaller, quiet resorts such as Altea and Denia, which offer a host of excellent amenities while retaining much of their original character.
Denia in particular is the ideal destination if you are looking to experience the more traditional aspects of Spain as it has many interesting buildings, a delightful cobbled old town and an imposing castle. Denia is a working port with several good sandy beaches, an intriguing history and also some of the best nature reserves in the region, including Montgo National Park. This area of oak trees, wild lavender and myriad other vegetation provides a habitat for many birds, so you may spot a partridge eagle or royal owl as well as a wealth of unusual seabirds.
You can go scuba diving amid colorful coral and sea caves in the Cape de Sant Antoni Sea Reserve, but if you prefer to be on the water rather than in it, the port offers plenty of opportunities for boat trips along the coast and fishing trips out to sea. You can also catch the ferry to Majorca or Ibiza, which is visible from the town on a clear day.
Make sure you dine out on some of the local cuisine. Paella is perhaps the best known dish, originating from nearby Valencia, and the seafood here is exquisite, especially Denia's famous red prawns. The tree-lined Marques de Campo has many open air restaurants, while the elegant waterfront rstaurants of El Port provide a fitting location for sampling the locally caught seafood.
And when the sun goes down you won't be stuck for things to do in Denia. There are hundreds of cocktail bars, late night restaurants and live music venues, or of course you can simply take a stroll along the waterfront.
